Hirudotherapy
A long time ago in ancient Egypt they knew all about healing bites of leeches, but it was recently that they officially acknowledged that leeches heal people better than the most expensive medications. Here we are talking about hirudotherapy which is a treatment with using of medicinal leech. In Ukraine it’s still considered like alternative medicine, though they have been often practicing leeching when treating both children and adults. One single leech is kind of a whole ‘mini’ factory. Active biological chemicals (ca 200 of them) present in leeches make up the whole Mendeleev’s table. They have a strong effect upon each organ system of a human body and like no other medication do not cause any side effect.
Today hirudotherapy is used in relation to the treatment of various diseases. They provide an effective means to reduce blood coagulation. They aid recovery from insomnia, headache, neurosis, loss of consciousness, heart disease, high blood pressure, asthma, epilepsy, migraine, cochlear neuritis, radiculitis, rheumatism, atrophic arthritis, arthrosis, osteochondrosis, bone and joints fractures.
Mr. Myroslav Pankevych, a Lviv doctor who uses methods of alternative medicine, has been doing leeching for treating his patients for over 30 years. And he is very successful in that. The secret of his success is that he uses a specific method - leech acupuncture that makes this healing effect. He applies leeches at specific places on a patient’s body nearby or at some distance from the organ, and the further these places are located form the organ, the more effective leeching is. The course of treatment is individual for every single patient. It depends on how bad the patient is. Let’s say in order to reduce blood coagulation, we apply leeching for 28 days. We use not more than 4-5 leeches at a time.
Local older ladies still keep leeches in jars on the window sills at their homes as they still use leeches by themselves for treating some of their diseases like recovering from high blood pressure. But Mr. Pankevych believes that only specialists can do hirudotherapy as they know the right ‘spots’ to apply leeches in each specific case disease.
Leeches bred in Ukraine are popular in European medical clinics. One of the biofactories in Donetsk area which breeds ca 1 mln of leeches per year cannot make all the orders for their European customers – they get so many of them!!! Mr. Volodymyr Zinykha, the President of Lviv regional pharmaceutical corporation, says that Lviv pharmacies purchase leeches from Baku, 120.000 leeches per year. The sell them at the price of 2-3 UAH. Breeding leeches is a good but hard business. It takes time and lots of efforts. The thing is that one leech is used once. For example, at the only medical clinic of Mr. Pankevych they use ca 35-45 thousands of leeches per year, so that you can imagine how many of them have to be bred for Ukraine’s medical clinics or hospitals. It takes 1.5-2 years to breed them, then another 4-6 months to quarantine…
